However, Ohio State quickly responded with a commanding second quarter, putting up an incredible 21 points while holding Notre Dame scoreless. The Buckeyes entered halftime with a 21-7 lead.
When the game resumed in the third quarter, the Buckeyes extended their lead with another touchdown and a field goal, bringing the score to 31-7. Notre Dame fought back with a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, narrowing the gap to 31-15.
In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame pushed further, scoring another touchdown and adding two extra points to make it 31-23, momentarily putting Ohio State under pressure. However, with time running out, Ohio State executed a decisive offensive drive, securing a field goal to cement their victory.
With this triumph, the Buckeyes claimed their ninth championship in program history. This victory also marked the conclusion of the longest postseason in NCAA history, following the implementation of the new playoff format this season. The format expanded the field from four teams to 12 contenders, and Ohio State emerged as the ultimate champion.
