Verstappen won pole position, but due to penalty, Russell will start first in Qatar

The newly crowned champion at the last Las Vegas Grand Prix (GP), Max Verstappen, premiered his accolade at the Qatar GP with pole position, unfortunately for him, he was penalized after Q3 and lost this position. Due to an incident with George Russell in Q3, where the Dutchman was on his slow lap, waiting for his last chance to set a time, Russell was in full qualifying and met Max on the track, the Briton had to make a maneuver to avoid the Red Bull, which sent him to the gravel for a few moments. Later, the FIA, in a document, specified that the “car number 1 was driving unnaturally slow considering the circumstances”. Because of this, Verstappen will start from second position, behind Russell himself, who had achieved the second fastest time in Qatar. Sergio “Checo” Pérez will start ninth on the grid at the Qatar Grand Prix after a solid performance in qualifying. Having missed Q3 since the United States Grand Prix, the Mexican driver showed significant improvement with a competitive pace. In Q2, Pérez placed fourth on fresh tires and remained among the top six for most of the session. Although he couldn’t challenge leading teams like McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes, he capitalized on a mistake by Pierre Gasly in the final attempt to secure a spot in Q3. LECLERC SHINES IN GP OF QATAR PRACTICE SESSION

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc delivered a standout performance during the sole Free Practice 1 (FP1) session of the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix, topping the timesheets ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as well as his teammate Carlos Sainz. In a weekend defined by the Sprint format, performance in FP1 held greater significance, especially on the demanding Lusail International Circuit. A CRUCIAL SESSION IN THE SPRINT FORMAT With the Sprint format in play, FP1 became unusually important as the only chance for drivers to fine-tune their cars before qualifying. Cooler track conditions compared to previous editions added another layer of complexity to the session.     The opening minutes saw intense activity, with teams utilizing Pirelli’s hard and medium tires to gather critical data. This created significant traffic on the track, accompanied by a flurry of radio complaints. Amid this scenario, Leclerc clocked an impressive provisional time of 1m 23.702s, securing the top spot on the leaderboard. SOFT TIRES CHANGE THE GAME In the final 10 minutes of the session, the introduction of soft tires brought a wave of improvements. Leclerc capitalized on the opportunity, setting a definitive time of 1m 21.953s to claim first place with a four-tenths advantage over Norris and Piastri. Carlos Sainz secured fourth place, half a second behind his teammate. Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda, Valtteri Bottas, and Lance Stroll surprised many by finishing among the top seven with fast late-session laps. MIXED RESULTS FOR FAVORITES Newly crowned 2024 champion Max Verstappen had a subdued start, finishing 11th after reporting balance issues in his Red Bull. Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton faced similar challenges, ending the session in eighth and tenth, respectively.     Fernando Alonso placed 12th with his Aston Martin, while Sergio Pérez endured a difficult session, finishing 19th. Others, like Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, also struggled, as their best times were set on medium tires. EXPECTATIONS FOR THE SPRINT QUALIFYING With the data collected during FP1, teams must refine their setups for the intense Sprint qualifying session, scheduled to begin at 8:30 PM local time. Drivers will need to maximize every second on a track that has proven both technical and demanding. Leclerc’s dominance in this session strengthens Ferrari’s ambitions in the constructors’ championship battle, while McLaren and Red Bull must respond quickly to avoid losing ground in what promises to be a thrilling weekend.

Challenges and strategies at the Qatar Grand Prix 2024.

THE TIRES FOR QATAR: THE KEY TO THE FINAL SPRINT OF 2024

The Qatar Grand Prix will host the final Sprint weekend of the 2024 Formula 1 season, with the Lusail International Circuit as the stage. Pirelli has unveiled the tire compounds that will play a pivotal role in team strategies for this penultimate race of the championship. HARDER COMPOUNDS FOR QATAR Unlike the previous race in Las Vegas, where the softest compounds were used, Qatar will see the hardest selection. Pirelli will bring the C1 as hard (white-marked), the C2 as medium (yellow-marked), and the C3 as soft (red-marked).     Due to the Sprint format, the tire allocation is reduced from 13 to 12 sets: 2 sets of hard tires 4 sets of medium tires 6 sets of soft tires The number of wet-weather tires remains unchanged, with five intermediate sets and two for extreme rain. LESSONS FROM 2023 The 2023 Qatar Grand Prix provided valuable insights for Pirelli and the FIA, after lap limits were imposed on each tire set (maximum of 18 laps) due to issues with the circuit’s curbs. This forced drivers to make at least three pit stops during the race. For 2024, adjustments were made to the curbs at seven key corners, including turns 1, 4, and the complex section from turns 12 to 14, which caused excessive wear on the tire sidewalls last year.     TECHNICAL PREPARATION AND TESTING Pirelli Motorsport engineers conducted extensive testing in their Milan laboratories, using samples of the new curbs designed by the FIA. Additionally, data from recent test sessions with older cars confirmed that these changes will mitigate the issues faced in 2023. Another significant adjustment was the addition of gravel strips at the exits of certain corners, a measure to prevent drivers from exceeding track limits.     STRATEGY AND WEATHER CONDITIONS This year’s conditions in Qatar will differ as the race takes place later in the season. While humidity may be lower, temperatures could still affect tire thermal degradation, complicating strategic decisions. In 2021, under different circumstances, some drivers opted for a single-stop strategy, while others, like Hamilton and Verstappen, used two-stop strategies to fight for victory. This highlights that tire management will be critical in Lusail, especially with the return of the Sprint format. A UNIQUE CHALLENGE TO CLOSE THE YEAR The 2024 Qatar Grand Prix will not only test the skills of drivers but also the adaptability of teams. Tires will play a decisive role on a circuit that promises unique challenges and a strategic battle for the final championship points.
