Vaslav Ayala aims for a podium finish at the Hong Kong 2024 Poomsae World Championship

Vaslav Ayala Talavera, a Mexican taekwondo athlete and world medalist, is competing in his seventh World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship in China. He aims to bring his experience to the team in his final participation in this category.   Ayala, who has won gold and silver medals at the World Championships, has already arrived in China to compete in the 2024 Hong Kong Poomsae World Championship, taking place from November 30 to December 4. This will be his seventh appearance at a World Championship event in this discipline.      “I’m competing in the under-30 team event. This is my seventh World Championship, and I’m excited because I see a team working with great interest. There are many young athletes with inspiration and motivation to reach the top in this World Championship,” shared the capital-based taekwondo athlete with the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE).  Ayala, who won the mixed pair title alongside Veracruz’s Ollin Medina and secured the individual runner-up position at the Aguascalientes 2014 World Championship, stated that his experience will be a valuable contribution to the national team.  Also of interest: William Arroyo to compete at the Hong Kong 2024 Poomsae World Championship   “I want to take advantage of these moments to support the younger categories—cadets, juniors, and even my own category. If I have advice or any experience I can share, I want to contribute. There’s a 10-year age difference between the youngest competitor in my category and me, so I want to make the most of my experiences, especially since this is my last year in this category. I want to help others with whatever they need in their journey,” emphasized the taekwondo athlete from Mexico City.      Throughout his distinguished career, Vaslav Ayala has earned gold, silver, and bronze medals at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, along with a silver medal at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, among other significant achievements.  “Taekwondo has shaped my personality for much of my life. It has changed me in many ways. I was once an insecure person when making decisions, but now I’m very confident,” he reflected.  Finally, he advised young athletes: “Work hard for what you want, but more than hard, work with intensity and intelligence. I believe one quality that defines me is courage—necessary to overcome fears, defeat challenges, and achieve the goals we set for ourselves.”

Para taekwondo resumed training after winning two medals in Paris 2024

The national para taekwondo team returned to CNAR with new talents after completing a successful cycle with medals in Paris 2024, Santiago 2023, and Veracruz 2023. They plan to compete in the 2025 World Championship.  The national para taekwondo team resumed training at the National Center for Sports Talent Development and High Performance (CNAR), now integrating new athletes after closing the previous cycle with two medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.      “We have a team with both experience and youth, so they are coming together to work as one. They are going through a general phase at the end of the year to leave behind the Paralympic Games in Paris, motivate themselves, get to know each other, and build unity so that next year we can start working more firmly,” said national coach Jannet Alegría Peña in an interview with CONADE (National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports).  The Mexican team had an outstanding performance in the recent Paralympic cycle, earning nine medals (two gold, five silver, and two bronze) at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games, three medals (gold, silver, and bronze) at the Veracruz 2023 World Championship, and two more (gold and silver) at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.  Also of interest: Mexico successfully concluded its participation in the 2024 Para Swimming World Series in Guadalajara  “The most important event we have next year is the World Championship, which will take place between October and November. It is a fundamental event where we aim to have several para taekwondo athletes on the podium. We hope for a comeback from Luis Mario, who narrowly missed a medal at Veracruz 2023. We want him on the podium next year, alongside Claudia Romero, Fernanda Vargas, and Jessica García. We also hope for success from new athletes joining the team. They have roughly 10 or 12 months to prepare and achieve great results,” Jannet Alegría emphasized.      The coach, recognized as the best para taekwondo coach by the Pan American Taekwondo Union, announced the addition of five new young athletes aged 14 to 17.  “This truly fills us with joy. These youngsters will compete at the Brazil Open in April to qualify,” said the coach, who shares leadership responsibilities with triple Olympic medalist María Espinoza.  Finally, Alegría expressed her gratitude for the support of the national para taekwondo team. “We want to thank everyone who supported us during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. It was incredibly motivating.”

LECLERC SHINES IN GP OF QATAR PRACTICE SESSION

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc delivered a standout performance during the sole Free Practice 1 (FP1) session of the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix, topping the timesheets ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as well as his teammate Carlos Sainz. In a weekend defined by the Sprint format, performance in FP1 held greater significance, especially on the demanding Lusail International Circuit. A CRUCIAL SESSION IN THE SPRINT FORMAT With the Sprint format in play, FP1 became unusually important as the only chance for drivers to fine-tune their cars before qualifying. Cooler track conditions compared to previous editions added another layer of complexity to the session.     The opening minutes saw intense activity, with teams utilizing Pirelli’s hard and medium tires to gather critical data. This created significant traffic on the track, accompanied by a flurry of radio complaints. Amid this scenario, Leclerc clocked an impressive provisional time of 1m 23.702s, securing the top spot on the leaderboard. SOFT TIRES CHANGE THE GAME In the final 10 minutes of the session, the introduction of soft tires brought a wave of improvements. Leclerc capitalized on the opportunity, setting a definitive time of 1m 21.953s to claim first place with a four-tenths advantage over Norris and Piastri. Carlos Sainz secured fourth place, half a second behind his teammate. Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda, Valtteri Bottas, and Lance Stroll surprised many by finishing among the top seven with fast late-session laps. MIXED RESULTS FOR FAVORITES Newly crowned 2024 champion Max Verstappen had a subdued start, finishing 11th after reporting balance issues in his Red Bull. Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton faced similar challenges, ending the session in eighth and tenth, respectively.     Fernando Alonso placed 12th with his Aston Martin, while Sergio Pérez endured a difficult session, finishing 19th. Others, like Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, also struggled, as their best times were set on medium tires. EXPECTATIONS FOR THE SPRINT QUALIFYING With the data collected during FP1, teams must refine their setups for the intense Sprint qualifying session, scheduled to begin at 8:30 PM local time. Drivers will need to maximize every second on a track that has proven both technical and demanding. Leclerc’s dominance in this session strengthens Ferrari’s ambitions in the constructors’ championship battle, while McLaren and Red Bull must respond quickly to avoid losing ground in what promises to be a thrilling weekend.
