La IndyCar podría volver a México

IndyCar could return to Mexico

IndyCar is very close to returning to Mexico thanks to businessman Ricardo Escotto and driver Pato O’Ward, according to reports. The anticipation for more world-class motorsport competitions in Mexico continues to grow. Following the return of the Formula 1 (F1) Mexico City Grand Prix and the confirmed visit of the NASCAR Cup Series, now IndyCar may be joining the party. IndyCar could race in Mexico next year According to reports from ESPN, businessman Ricardo Escotto, who holds the series license in Mexico, is already in advanced talks with organizers to bring one of the premier American and global racing competitions back to the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The project is planned to take place in late March or early April of 2026, potentially making it one of the first races on the IndyCar calendar for that season. The project is supported by Pato O’Ward The desire to see IndyCar return to Mexico is shared not only by Ricardo Escotto, father of Indy NXT driver Ricardo Escotto Jr., but also by Arrow McLaren driver Pato O’Ward. O’Ward is a fan favorite in Mexico due to his strong performances in IndyCar and his role as a reserve driver for McLaren in Formula 1. His popularity could play a key role in making the project for a Mexico City IndyCar Grand Prix a reality. Furthermore, Pato has consistently expressed his desire to race in his homeland and in front of his people. In an interview, the Mexican driver even mentioned that if he’s given an IndyCar race in Mexico, he won’t step foot in an F1 paddock again. The last time this competition was held on Mexican soil was in 2007, with eight editions having taken place in Mexico City and six in Monterrey. Cover photo: X (@PatricioOward)

Piastri ganó en Arabia y ahora lidera el Mundial de Pilotos

Oscar Piastri wins in Arabia and leads the World Drivers Championship

After an intense duel with Verstappen in the opening laps, Oscar Piastri claimed victory at the Saudi Arabian GP and moved to the top of the Drivers’ Standings A thrilling night race unfolded at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix (GP), where Oscar Piastri made sure not to let Max Verstappen steal the spotlight, as had happened in qualifying. The Australian driver secured victory at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, taking over the lead in the Formula 1 (F1) Drivers’ Championship. Piastri vs Verstappen From the moment the lights went out in Jeddah, the battle between Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen kicked off fiercely. In the very first lap, the Dutchman took the lead with an overtake outside the track limits—an action that would earn him a five-second penalty. Meanwhile, Piastri remained close behind, at times following the Red Bull and at others his teammate Lando Norris, before ultimately taking the lead and holding onto it all the way to the checkered flag. Thanks to a strong finish, Piastri kept Verstappen at bay, forcing him to settle for second place, while Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium after a tough defense against the second McLaren, which finished fourth. New Drivers’ Championship leader With this victory, Oscar Piastri now totals 99 points in the Drivers’ Standings, becoming the first Australian driver to lead the championship since Mark Webber in 2010. Behind him is Lando Norris with 89 points, and Max Verstappen remains third with 87 points. Further down the field, Fernando Alonso finished 11th, Liam Lawson 12th, Ollie Bearman 13th, Esteban Ocon 14th, and Nico Hülkenberg 15th. The last positions were occupied by Lance Stroll, Jack Doohan, and Gabriel Bortoleto. Unfortunately, Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly didn’t make it past the first lap, as a collision between them resulted in terminal damage to their cars, forcing both to retire from the race. Kimi Antonelli, el piloto de F1 que no puede conducir su Mercedes

Kimi Antonelli, the F1 driver who can’t drive his Mercedes

Despite driving an F1 car, Kimi Antonelli cannot drive his personal Mercedes in Italy due to licensing restrictions and the car’s high power The 2025 Formula 1 (F1) season has brought a breath of fresh air to the grid, with six rookies among the 20 drivers making their debut in the top tier of motorsport. Among them, one name stands out: 18-year-old Italian driver Kimi Antonelli. Antonelli, over 300 km/h in F1, but restricted in Italy Kimi has delivered impressive performances for Mercedes, finishing in the points in three of the four races held so far. He currently sits seventh in the Drivers’ Standings with 30 points, ahead of experienced names like Lewis Hamilton, Alexander Albon, and Esteban Ocon. Along with his teammate George Russell, he has helped Mercedes secure second place in the Constructors’ Championship. However, despite all this, in his home country of Italy, Antonelli is not allowed to drive his brand-new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupé, a gift from the team for his outstanding performances. While Antonelli does hold a valid driver’s license, the issue lies in his age and the car itself. According to Italian laws, newly licensed drivers are prohibited from operating high-powered vehicles. Considering Antonelli’s car boasts 585 horsepower, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, and has a top speed of 317 km/h, it far exceeds the limits imposed by Italian regulations.  You may be interested in: McLaren, Red Bull’s unexpected enemy Kimi could find a loophole Legally, Antonelli would not be allowed to drive his new car in Italy until 2028. However, since his driver’s license is issued by San Marino, a microstate within Italian territory, Kimi could potentially bypass this restriction. Because his documentation is not issued by the Italian government, the national laws do not apply to him in the same way. This represents a loophole in Italy’s legal system, allowing Antonelli to technically circumvent the law, although he would still need to wait another three years to drive his Mercedes freely in Italy without any legal concerns. McLaren, el enemigo inesperado de Red Bull

McLaren, Red Bull’s unexpected enemy

With four races completed in F1, McLaren positions itself to win it all, putting Red Bull and Max Verstappen—who had dominated in recent years—on the ropes With the first rounds of the 2025 Formula 1 (F1) season underway, a team has emerged that just two years ago was not even considered a contender for the Constructors’ Championship, let alone the Drivers’ Championship. Now, the power of McLaren is undeniable; with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix just around the corner, the papaya team dominates the highest tier of motorsport. The decline of the energy drink giant’s hegemony After securing the Constructors’ Championships in 2022 and 2023, along with Max Verstappen’s four consecutive titles since 2021, it seemed the third decade of the 2000s would belong completely to the energy drink team, echoing Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton’s domination in the 2010s. However, internal issues within the Austrian team, frequent mistakes from the pit crew, and Red Bull’s inability to establish a solid two-driver lineup—struggling to find a teammate for Max who could drive a car designed for Verstappen, win like Verstappen, but not be Verstappen—have led to Red Bull losing the Constructors’ Championship to McLaren last year. Now, they find themselves chasing the British squad. McLaren’s resurgence after 26 years Until the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, McLaren had gone 26 years without winning a title of this kind. And since 2008, when Sir Lewis Hamilton won the Drivers’ Championship with the team, the British outfit had not seen a championship-winning driver among its ranks. However, McLaren now appears to have a clear goal: to crown one of its drivers in 2025. Thanks to significant upgrades to their car in 2024—which propelled their drivers into top positions and earned them the Constructors’ title—Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are now sitting first and second in the Drivers’ Standings, with the Briton leading at 77 points, the Australian close behind with 74, and the reigning four-time world champion, Max Verstappen, in third with 69 points. Red Bull will need to step up, especially considering that in the Constructors’ Standings, McLaren holds a commanding lead with 151 points, while Red Bull is not even their closest rival—Mercedes sits second with 93 points, leaving Red Bull in third with 71 points. Kimi Antonelli finished 11th, Alex Albon was 12th, Isack Hadjar 13th, Jack Doohan 14th, and Fernando Alonso crossed the line in 15th.

Prime Sports dominated Puebla

With Mateo Girón claiming both victories this weekend in Trucks, and Xavi Razo dominating the NASCAR México Series, Prime Sports Racing Team reigned supreme at the Autódromo Miguel E. Abed. The action came to a close in both the NASCAR México Series and the Trucks México Series, following a thrilling showdown in the Commscope 200 Puebla and a spectacular double-header in Trucks. There was no question which team owned the weekend: Prime Sports Racing Team. Xavi Razo, driving car #7, took victory in the main event, while Mateo Girón, behind the wheel of truck #5, stole the spotlight with back-to-back wins. “The Wonder Kid” Mateo Girón Starting with Rounds 3 and 4 of the Trucks México Series, both races had one standout name: Mateo Girón. The driver from Zacatecas arrived at the Autódromo Miguel E. Abed already holding two wins this season, and on Saturday, after qualifying second, it only took a few laps and a couple of yellow flags for Girón to seize the lead and secure his third consecutive victory. In that race, Edwin Arenas defended his second-place position excellently, while Valeria Aranda, showcasing strong technique over the 40 laps, completed the Top 3. But Mateo’s weekend heroics didn’t end there. On Sunday, with the Top 10 grid reversed based on Saturday’s results, truck #5 started from 10th place. Girón’s sharp technique and aggressive driving allowed him to climb through the pack, just like the day before, ultimately capturing his fourth win in a row. He now leads the Trucks México Series drivers’ standings. In Sunday’s race, Santiago Cruz claimed second place, with Roberto Espinosa rounding out the Top 3. Lucky Number 7: Xavi Razo unstoppable in Puebla Turning to the main event of NASCAR México, the 75 laps around the Miguel E. Abed circuit were electric. Right from the start, the duel between Alex de Alba, who had earned pole position, and Xavi Razo, who started third but quickly moved into second, was captivating. It was on lap 17 when Razo overtook De Alba and claimed the lead. Driving car #7, Razo kept battling for the top spot, and after the stage break, thanks to a superb job by his pit crew, he solidified his lead and never looked back. He crossed the finish line to take his first victory of the 2025 NASCAR México Series season, leaving Alex de Alba over three seconds behind in second place. Rookie Eloy Sebastián completed the podium in third. With this win, Xavi Razo now sits at the top of the standings. Los novatos se apoderan de la FP1 en Bahréin

Rookies take over FP1 in Bahrain

In FP1 of Bahrain, six rookies got behind the wheel of F1 cars, in a session where Lando Norris set the fastest lap time. The excitement of Round 4 of the 2025 Formula 1 (F1) season kicked off with Free Practice 1 at the Bahrain Grand Prix (GP). This session was notable for a special reason, as six rookies had the opportunity to drive the top-tier single-seaters at the Bahrain International Circuit. In compliance with the F1 regulation requiring each team to field a rookie driver in at least four practice sessions throughout the season, FP1 in Bahrain saw Williams, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Haas, Mercedes-Benz, and Red Bull each selecting one of their young prospects. From Williams, Luke Browning was the driver chosen for this FP1 session, finishing in 13th place; Dino Beganovic, representing Ferrari, finished just behind the Williams. For Aston Martin, Felipe Drugovich concluded the session in 16th. Ryo Hirakawa, who had previously participated in a practice session in Japan driving an Alpine, ended this outing in 17th, this time at the wheel of a Haas. Rounding out the rookie field, Frederik Vesti drove for Mercedes and placed 18th, while Ayumu Iwasa replaced Max Verstappen in the Red Bull but finished in the penultimate spot during this first Free Practice. La F1 podría regresar a Sudáfrica en 2028

F1 could return to South Africa in 2028

With an ambitious project in Cape Town, South Africa is looking to host Formula 1 again on a circuit designed around the DHL Stadium, which was inaugurated for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. South Africa is making history with an innovative proposal to bring Formula 1 (F1) back to the African continent. Cape Town has presented a plan to transform the area surrounding the DHL Stadium—built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup—into an urban circuit. This ambitious project aims to return the pinnacle of motorsport to the world’s largest continent, the only region currently absent from the F1 calendar. South Africa last hosted a Grand Prix (GP) in 1993 at the Kyalami circuit, which had been the home of the South African GP from 1967 until its final race in 1993. Now, after an initial bid in Kyalami was rejected, the South African government is backing the Cape Town circuit, designed by German engineer and F1 track specialist Hermann Tilke. The proposed layout spans 5.7 kilometers along the Green Point waterfront. Additionally, Igshaan Almay, CEO of the project, emphasized in an interview with Motorsports the logistical advantages of the venue, including its proximity to the city’s airport and an extensive selection of hotels for F1 fans attending the event. The South African GP could attract an estimated 250,000 spectators over the race weekend. Tough Competition for 2028 This project faces strong competition, as several emerging locations are vying to host an F1 race in the 2028 season. Among them are Thailand, South Korea, and Rwanda—the latter also aiming to bring Formula 1 back to Africa.
